Research Blog : Music Video Convention

Hello and welcome back to my blog!! Today I will be discussing the research that was done for my music video

You Need to Calm Down- Taylor Swift

  • Wide shot, medium long shot, establishing shot, medium shot, aerial shot, tracking, pan, two shot, group shots, close up, point of view, high angle, eye level shot, zoom

  • Cross cutting, action match, insert, eye-line match, jump cut, cutaway, shot/reverse shot

  • Lip-syncing

  • Costumes were bright, colorful, glamorous costumes that match the characters, bright lighting, acting matches characters, for example Taylor Swift acts sassy and confident while the opposing people in the video act aggressive and discriminatory. Makeup matches characters overall style, bright and bold for the majority in the video. Props match the scenes being bold and colorful, often times being statement pieces that stand out. Sets match the props, complement costumes and accentuate the overall message and bright peppy nature of the music video. The set of the video is mostly outside.

7 Rings- Ariana Grande

  • Wide shot, aerial shot, Dutch angle, medium close up, medium long shot, establishing shot, two shot, group shots, zoom, eye level, high angle, low angle, tracking, medium long shot, medium shot.

  • Cross cutting, jump cut, fade in, fade out, dissolve

  • Lip-syncing

  • Costumes were mostly bright, kept in the same color tones and palette throughout. The lighting was a mixture of both bright and dim, being mostly dim inside the house and outside on the lawn. The characters acting matches the confident and egotistical vibe and meaning of the song, where they dance, party, and socialize. Their makeup matches their outfits, being mostly bold and something someone would wear to a party. The props are all mostly shiny, futuristic, modern, and expensive, as the song is about being able to afford anything she wants. The sets change throughout the video but mostly remain either inside or outside of the house.

Love me like you do - Ellie Goulding

  • Low angle shot, wide shot, extreme close up, pan movement, high angle shot, over the shoulder shot, medium shot, tracking shot, establishing shot, two shot, birds eye view, and Dutch view.

  • Cutaways throughout the whole video, Fade in bringing in a new location, shot reverse shot.

  • lip syncing

  • Costumes are very dark which fit with the lightning, being very dark and mysterious. There is a flash of light that shows Ellie Goulding in multiple different scenes; however, the lighting mostly remains dim inside the house. The makeup matches the characters with a very neutral tone. The characters are dancing in some scenes that are set in the dark mansion which adds to the mysterious feel to the video. The props are mostly left alone and as part of the set, being expensive pieces that you would typically see in a mansion. The sets change throughout the video but the constant set is where the singer is in the mansion.

  • Thats all the research that was done and I can't wait to see you next blog!
